Basic health information for travelers to Malawi

• Cholera and rabies are present in this country so every precaution needs to be taken in order to avoid infection. Contact your doctor for advise.

• All forms of local water should be regarded has being potentially contaminated and should be thoroughly boiled before being drunk. Bottled water should be available and is recommended where possible. Milk is likely to be unclean and will need to be pasteurised to be made drinkable. Poultry and dairy products should be avoided where possible. Meat, fish and vegetables should be well cooked and consumed boiling hot and fruit well peeled prior to consumption. Food and drink served by vendors is best avoided where possible.

• Hepatitis B and HIV are present throughout the region and all visitors are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution when dealing with bloody or infected needles or when engaging in sexual activity during the course of their visit.

• Travellers to Malawi are strongly advised to avoid any potential demonstrations which could turn violent without warning and should stay informed regarding the current political situation throughout the region prior to beginning their journey.

• Organised crime is present throughout the country and many instances of theft and violent assault have been reported. All visitors to Malawi are strongly advised to keep their passport and other valuable items in a safe and secure location for the duration of their visit and should avoid any obvious displays of wealth which could potentially attract unwanted attention. Travel alone after dark is not advised and all travellers should exercise extreme caution when taking money out from local cash machines or when visiting popular locations.
